New Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) Program
91黑料 will launch a Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program designed specifically for physician assistants (PAs) seeking career advancement in leadership and specialized clinical roles. The fully online, 12-month DMSc program will begin recruiting in fall 2025, accepting applications in early 2026, with the first cohort starting in July 2026.
The DMSc degree has emerged as the preferred doctoral degree for PAs nationwide to prepare them for leadership positions in healthcare, medical education, and the pharmaceutical industry. Recognizing that PA master's programs often exceed 90 credits, DeSales structured its DMSc to enable qualified PAs to complete their doctoral degree efficiently within four 10-week semesters.
The launch of the online DMSc program expands 91黑料’s portfolio of strong healthcare programs, including a recent partnership with St. Luke's University Health Network to offer a nurse anesthesia program. Within the University’s College of Healthcare Professions, established programs in nursing, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and physician assistant studies have solidified DeSales as a leader in healthcare education.
Alan Heckman, DMSc, PA-C, chair of the medical studies major and associate professor, has been appointed as the new program’s director. He brings extensive clinical experience in emergency medicine, family medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, and critical care to the role. Heckman earned his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from 91黑料 in 2011 and completed his Doctor of Medical Science degree from the University of Lynchburg in 2024, focusing on Emergency Management and Global Health.
“As DMSc becomes the leading clinical doctorate for PAs, DeSales’ new program reflects the university’s commitment to the evolving healthcare landscape particularly in PAs advanced education,” said Dr. Heckman. “With most PA master's programs already exceeding 90 credits, DSU offers a smart, efficient path to a doctorate completed in just 12 months.”
The DMSc program will offer three initial concentrations: medical education, executive leadership, and advanced professional practice. In addition, students will complete clinical practicums, concentration-specific courses, and a research capstone culminating in a publishable project or scholarly presentation.
“This innovative program positions DSU as a leader in PA doctoral education, equipping healthcare professionals with the skills, knowledge, and leadership expertise necessary for advancing the profession,” added Leo-Felix M. Jurado, Ph.D., dean of the College of Healthcare Professions.
The fully online DMSc program follows an asynchronous format that allows DSU to reach a national audience while maintaining the university’s commitment to creating connected learning experiences. Although remote, the program is designed to foster deep connections to the DeSales community and provide transformative educational experiences that advance both academic and professional growth.
